Confession and Assurance

Prayer of Confession:

All: Gracious God, we begin this New Year with you; we want to start off on the right footing.  We acknowledge the things of the past which we regret, forgive us.  For all the times we have acted without love, forgive us.  For all the times we have failed to forgive, forgive us.  For all the hurtful words said and helpful words unsaid, forgive us.  For all the unfinished tasks of the year past, of commitments made but not kept, of unfulfilled hopes and dreams we didn’t pursue, and for the countless opportunities we ignored, forgive us.

Help us to begin anew; help us to look to 2012 in greater dependence on your Spirit; help us to live more fully in the joy of the risen Lord, Jesus; help us to trust in the love and care of our heavenly Father.  We pray in the name of Jesus, our Lord and our King.  Amen!

PASTOR’S COMMENT:

January 1 is the day we tend to look into the year ahead, and wonder if we may accomplish anything noteworthy, or how our health may hold up, etc.  When we do that, we tend to become anxious and worry about whether or not God will answer our prayers and meet our needs.

During his earthly ministry, Jesus provided us with instructions about worry: “Do not worry about tomorrow…” and “Do not worry about your life…”  Read Matthew 6:25-34!  God’s will for our lives in the year ahead, is simply to love him with our whole heart and seek his kingdom above the world’s passions.  Let’s rest in God’s blessings for us, one day at a time.  Besides, His blessings are probably more than we can handle or need.
