Highlights of the Classis
Chatham meeting Rev. George Rowaan of the host Tillsonburg CRC led the delegates in an uplifting time of praise and worship. Rev. Vic Vandermolen and Rev. Bob Loerts took their places as Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the day. Rev. Richard Vandervaart reported, on behalf of the Credentials Committee, that 68 delegates were seated, including 14 first-time delegates. Classis approved the request of Forest CRC for disbanding of that congregation under Artcle 38-c of the church order and also the decision of the congregation regarding the distribution of assets. Classis passed the 2008 budget. It is set at $54.25 per professing member, based on the current level of 5,400 professing members in Classis Chatham. Tom de Ruiter made a presentation on behalf of himself and his wife, Deb, about their fruitful work for the Kingdom with CRWM in Mali. Classis received a letter from Sarnia-Redeemer CRC indicating that the church will welcome all baptized members to partake in the Celebration of the Lord's Supper, under the discretion of the parents, beginning October 28, 2007. Classis approved the request from London-Good News CRC for separation from its Pastor, Rev. Robert (Bob) Haven under Article 17. Classis determined not to ascede to an overture from Blenheim CRC requesting Synod 2008 to re-evaluate current level of Minister's Pension Fund assessment on the grounds that this matter is already being studied by a recently appointed Task Force. Blenheim CRC indicated support for this decision. Rev. Jim Poelman was appointed Church Counselor for Wallaceburg CRC. Rev. Pieter Pereboom will become Church Counselor for Strathroy-Westmount, and Rev. Ralph Wigboldus will continue as Church Counselor for London-Good News. Classis Chatham offered heartfelt thanks, evidenced by the sustained applause, to Grace Miedema, (Chaplain at Fanshawe College), Rev. John Van Til (Classical Ministry Developer) and Jack Herder (Stated Clerk) for their faithful ministry over the years. Rev. George Saylor enthusiastically reported that about 200 people have begun public worship at Connections Community Church (the north London church plant). Find them on the web at www.connectionschurch.ca Following thanks from Rev. Bob Loerts, Rev. Vic Vandermolen led the gathering in a closing prayer and we sang "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow" The next regularly scheduled meeting of Classis Chatham will be held on January 22, 2008, D.V. |
